881 S-O-S Leak

A friend of mine has an 881 that has developed a leak from a small, oval shaped plate on the right side near the footboard. The plate is held in place with two studs and has what appears to be a through bolt in the center, probably to attach something on the inside. He's asked me if he can remove the plate to replace the gasket. I expect that something inside will fall down if he removes the center through bolt.

Anyone know what is attached inside by the through bolt and if it can be removed without things falling inside? If not, might it be possible to stabilize whatever is attached inside once the top cover has been removed?

Dean, I believe your friend will be alright if that plate is removed. The center capscrew actually attaches that plate to the transmission case. The two nuts are actually retainers for the #2 and #3 band levers. Guess maybe they figured the case needed a little strengthening there

Be careful not to disturb those two studs anymore than need be, though! I'm not sure if they can drop or not.

This might help.
