620 rear axel bearing

Hello all I have a 620 with a Sherman fork lift that I am working on. the left rear axel seal was leaking badly. when I removed the rear wheel I found almost an 1/8 inch of movement in and out and up and down of the axel. I removed the axel to replace the bearing, cup and the seals. When I reassembled everything I still had the same problem. I can tighten things up if I remove most of the shims between the rear housing and the hub but the break shaft jams tight. I hate to do it but I thought if I disassemble everything and put a spacer behind the bearing cup I could get the bearing to tighten up before the brake shaft binds up. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks Dave

Set the bearing clearance per the procedures in the Ford manual.

You will likely need to remove shims from both sides.

If removing shims does not result in proper clearance, one or both axles will need to be replaced.
