just bought a 67 3400 tractor that has power steering that isn,t working, the resevoire is full of air bubbles when the engine is running, i have checked the hoses for leaks, but they seem to be okay. i inspected the filter and resevoire, and it seems very clean, anyone got any suggestions, thanks for looking

Air bubbles can be from the suction side of the system sucking air or from too much restriction to the flow of the fluid at some point.

The suction line from the reservoir down to the pump could have a pinhole leak that isn't big enough to let fluid out but can let air in.

Or the filter could be clogged with fine debris that you can't see.

Does the power assist steering seem to be working OK?

I'm assuming this is the old style pump with seperate reservoir under the hood?
If so I agree with Sean.
Either a hole in the rubber suction line to the pump or a plugged filter.
It's easy enough to change both and eliminate that end as a potential problem.
If that doesn't fix it then it's a problem in the control valve in the column.
Replace the lines and filter and give us an update.
Those are very simple systems and together we can get it working again.

today i did some testing on the power steering pump, hooked up a gauge and cranked the tractor, gave a slight bit of throttle and the gauge shot instantly to well over a 10000 lbs.,i immediatly shut the tractor down,i am baffled because it,s only suppose to have 650 lbs. of pressure, but yet i have no power steering whatsoever, can anyone tell me what to look at next, thanks for looking.

How did you plumb in the gauge? If you dead headed the pump then I can believe that it shot up to over 1000 psi. at least for an instant. The gauge has to be added via either a test port made for the purpose of testing, or via a tee in the line. The relief valve should have opened and limited the pressure to 650 psi or so, at least after the initial surge.

thanks for the quick response, yes i did dead head the pump,i was just trying to eliminate the pump from the equation,i will check my hoses and filter and retry and let you know, thanks again,Steve Barrett
