Overheating problem

About a year ago before I got sick, I had started a 950 project. Now that I'm getting better, I am putting it back together. I replaced the radiator and hoses, but could not find the new thermostat I had bought, so I reinstalled the old one. When I start the tractor up now, it gets hot real fast. The top of the radiator and upper hose are hot as hell, but the bottom of the radiator and the lower hose are both cold. Any suggestion where to start looking first?

You can pull the thermostat and run it without it to see if thats your problem. I wouldnt worry about sealing it good then you can take it back off. Did you install it the right way? A heat temperarure gun is a handy tool and doesnt cost much. You can check everything that generates heat with them.

Thanks, I will drin the system and pull the thermostst first. Might as well boil it on the stove to see if it is even opening.

If the top tank is getting hot, the thermostat is
opening and allowing coolant to flow, but since the
bottom tank is cold, something is blocking the flow
between the tanks. Did mice plug it up for you while
it was sitting? Or mud daubers? When Luke and I
put the air cleaner back on his 4000 last week, we
dumped out about a cup of soybeans when we went
to put fresh oil in it..

Radiator was new out of a sealed box from Dennis Carpenter. I just boiled the thermostat and it looks like it is opening ok.

(quoted from post at 08:59:35 09/04/18) I know they wont work if put in backwards. I cant remember which way they go.

You should be able to see the word TOP at the top facing you.

Dropped by Harbor Freight today and got one of those thermometers. It was about $25.
Also ordered a water pump while everything was back apart.

(quoted from post at 09:01:41 09/06/18) Coolnt is brand new and fully filled.

John P. Did it take the full amount required? It is to uncommon for coolant to fill up to full and be only 2/3 full if there is no way for trapped air to exit.
