801 Fuel dip stick

Are there instructions for making a dip stick for the 17 gallon 801 Series gas tank? Similar to the paint stick for the 8N I made years ago.

Thanks!

Funny you should ask. I used a silver solder stick and silver soldered it to the fuel tank lid. I made some marks on it as I added fuel. I think a piece of brazing rod would work also.

Mike, could you please post the actual “measuring stick?”

Something like... (from the bottom of the stick)

3/4 inch mark = 1 gallon
1.5 inch mark = 2 gallons

Pretty much just measure the gap between your gallon marks.

This would save a bunch of 800/801 owners the chore of emptying their tanks and spoon feeding gas back into it.

You’d have our eternal gratitude!
Cheers!!

Brooms wear out. When worn out cut the handle off and save it. Keep it by the shop door for sticking any and all tanks. Works well for all makes and models at my place.

Not worried about obtaining a stick. I'm interested in the scale used to mark the stick to make it a measuring stick.

Looks like it would be simple to me. Top to
bottom is 17. Center would be 8.5. Division
makes the rest easy.

Yes, I guess that will be “close enough,” though, to be totally accurate, the tank would have to be a perfectly squared box and not tapered any.

What’s the average fuel burn of an 841 working a shredder?
Four-ish gallons an hour?

I'm no help to you Kenster. I don't understand the need for such
precise measurements unless you're trying to measure the fuel
economy compared to other tractors or while making changes.

I use a plain old paint stick. No marks.
If it's down to two or three inches, I fill it up. Probably needs to
cool off while I go get gas anyway. Or, as the old adage goes,
keep the top half full and the bottom half will take care of itself. ;)
