Have posted before about this tractor, runs
raggedy sounding at higher rpms. New fuel
filter, good flow, changed out the oil bath
air filter because it looked stacked up,
took off the intake hose, no change. So
took off the pump and injectors and had
rebuilt at $650+, -still runs raggedy
sounding at higher rpm. Sputters with
smoke. Runs fine low to mid rpm. Any
ideas appreciated.

Loosen the 3 injection pump mounting bolts and twist the top of the pump outwards (towards you) a few degrees at a time and see if that helps. If it does, suggest sending the pump back out and asking them to check the operation of the auto advance. This assumes of course that you lined up the marks correctly upon initial install.

Maybe Dieseltech will pipe up.

I have a 6610 that ran like crap, the plungers in the pump were sticking, but it has been OK since the rebuild.

If this is Simms, have you changed the oil in the pump?

I put it at zero, tried moving the pump slightly left and right, sounded worse... Just don't know. Thanks, Matt.

Advance your pump 1.5-2 degrees. You will see it run much nicer. Almost all tractors will start to get a little extra lash in the timing gears after many years of use. This retards the timing even though the timing marks say you are dead on. Al

If it's a timing related issue, it should get better as you pull the top of the pump towards you, which is effectively advancing the timing. Give it another try - go at least 3-4 degrees.
