Ford 640 will not start

I have a ford 640 that is dead, battery is charged replaced the solenoid, and coil it is not making a sound when you push the start button.
This thing ran fine last year. When I put power from the battery directly to the starter it turns over but will not start. I believe I have
two separate issues going on here. First issue seems electrical and when bypassing everything and going directly to the starter it turns
over but wont pop.

Suggestions on where to begin?

Thanks,
Doug

You said you replaced the solenoid. If you got it at a car parts
store, you probably have the wrong one. You need one that is
actuated by applying ground through the neutral safety push
button. Assuming your tractor is wired as original.
The ones for cars/trucks look the same but are actuated by power.

Once you have that resolved, I would look at cleaning the points.
They're often the culprit for a no spark condition, if that's what
you have. Easy enough to test with an adjustable gap spark tester
or even an old spark plug spread out a bit and grounded.
No need to file them, just clean them and burnish with card stock
or a piece of brown paper bag. Gap should be 25 thousandths.

Doug -first rookie mistake #1 is replacing parts without performing a true root cause problem solving procedure. What made you think the solenoid was bad, and do we assume you mean the starter solenoid, mounted on the top of starter barrel? This part is often cornfused by some with the safety neutral starting switch/button on the top of shifter cover -two different animals. Why would the coil make a sound? You and We need to know, is it 6V/POS GND or a 12 V switch over job? Simply charging a battery does not mean it is 'goo'. Get it tested -it must sustain a full charge under load -specific gravity test on cells. You only have one issue -bad/incorrect wiring, IMHO. First: get battery tested/replaced if bad. While power is OFF, verify wiring is all correct. If 12V search for 'WIRING PICTOGRAMS BY JMOR' and download a copy. 3 things are needed: Fuel Flow; Spark; and Compression. Forget compression for now. Check fuel flow to carb -search archives here for method, it's been discussed over and over. Next is spark test. My money is electrical, not fuel, but cover all the basics. Get a copy of the original 600/800 Operator's Manual available at nnalert and a copy of the I&T F-20 Manual.

Don't overlook a corroded ground cable to frame connection. I prefer to connect ground cable to main framework. Be sure connection is clean and tight. Are battery cables in good condition?

Did you clean the points? fold a dollar bill or piece of thin cardboard and draw through closed points to remove invisible film.
