4.2 block boed to 4.4?

On one of the Ford tractor pages on Facebook, I've
seen someone claim that a Ford engine with a 4.2"
bore (3000 diesel, in this case) can be bored out to
4.4" when being rebuilt. While I haven't heard of
nearly as many 3000 getting holes in the cylinder
walls as models with bigger engines, I really don't
see how it would be possible to bore a block 200
thousandths without hitting a wster jacket. Any of
you ever hear this claim?

Yes, it's been done many times. There are many pre-'68 5000s running around my area that started life as a 233, and are now living as 256 engines. The dealership I used to work for did that many times.

That said, I personally would not be comfortable doing that to an engine of mine that I expected to work hard every day and never let me down.

One more thing to add... (I wish this site had an edit feature), to get a .200" diameter larger bore you need to remove .100" worth of metal. That is less than 1/8".

The 200 cu in engines like in the 4000 + series are 4.4x4.4. You think they cast a different block for 4.2x4.2 engines? Seriously doubt it. If you over do it there are sleeve kits out there....I just ran across a www Ford parts list yesterday with them listed.

Ag engines could be different but I wouldn't put it past Ford the cast different blocks.
Their past history with the FE series automotive engines proves they casted different thickness of the same style blocks depending on what bore dia it was going to have.

Best to sonic test before boring.

Good point on testing but economy of measure isn't with the farm tractor like it is with the automotive industry where you are talking 10's of thousands
maybe vs 100's of thousands or so. (opinion)
