power steering 801 (factory), lines from valve to cylinder

I had to replace the clutch. So I took everything apart even the steering column. (not a good idea, removing the drag links made the sector shaft seals leak). I replaced the PS pump with a 65 Mustang or Thunderbird pump $65. Upon filling the PS system, the lower steering column shaft seal leaked. The SS spring had broken. Luckily, I found the upper (c5nn3n739a) and lower shaft seal (e1nn3n62aa) as well as the 2 O-rings (87150s94) and installed them. Yes, you can loose a few of the ball bearings, be careful. I think Murphy had been working along side me.

I had taped the power steering hoses with tape as the upper hose to the control valve on each side. One tape fell off. Seems like there was one best way to fit them up.

I thought I should check before starting it back up, because of Murphy. I found a hose diagram for the 600 and the 800 series. My left cylinder matches the drawing and line connections. The right cylinder angled port #2 is on the inside but, the lines still match.

Can anyone confirm that the diagram is proper for the 801 series? I have a 841d or a early 4000 that looks like a 801 but was yellow and red.

Thanks, Mike

I don't understand your drawing.
And my 3000 is 115 miles away so I can't
look at it.
They are the same so maybe someone can
check theirs.
What I have done is to hook up the lines
where you think they should go. Then remove
the ball joint from the cylinder and hang
the front of the cylinder on the drag link
with a piece of wire.
Start the tractor and watch that the
cylinder movement corresponds to the drag
link as you turn the steering wheel.
It can be a bit hard to get your head
around it but you'll figure it out.
Word of warning:
If you get them on wrong DO NOT force the
wheel against the hydraulics. That can
break the springs in the hyd block in the
column.

Thanks for the reply.

The drawing is form a 1957 Tractor Shop Supplement - 600-800 Power Steering.pdf

I'm hesitant about starting it up and putting a thousand plus pounds pressure on the control valve because I just replaced the seals.

I found one site that said the cylinder tube connections are at the bottom. Which mine are. And said that both inside cylinder connections went to the top of the control valve or the bottom. Then another place said the cylinder tube connections were on the top. So, who knows.

Both of my cylinders have the angled port on the bottom and is on the inside nearest the bell housing, not like the 600-800 picture.

I need something like (setting in the seat), the right cylinder, straight tube connection goes to the (top or bottom) of the control valve and the left straight tube connection goes to...

Thanks, Mike
