soot from exhaust

I have a diesel 5000 that has a fair amount of soot that comes out the bottom of the exhaust pipe and drips runs and splatters down the side of the of the engine near the oil filter. it also has a little that makes its way to the top of the muffler and runs down. the tractor starts fairly easy but it does smoke a little. this tractor isn't used a whole lot and is not worked hard, usually 1/4 or 1/2 throttle pulling a wagon load of firewood or blading. my question is what is causing the black runny soot and is it something to be concerned with.

Sounds like diesel "slobber". It happens when a diesel engine is run a lot without working it real hard. Any hydrocarbon that burns (diesel, gasoline, kerosene, propane, etc.) produces water (H2O), and when you don't run a diesel engine hard the exhaust doesn't get hot enough to carry that water away as steam/vapor and it condenses inside the exhaust system. Then any partially burnt fuel condenses with the water and you end up with water and partially burnt fuel as well as other carbon deposits in a liquid/sludge form coming out of the exhaust.

Take it out and work the engine hard for a couple of hours and it should clear up.
