How about you tranny experts tell me why some 5 speeds rattle when idling and some dont. I know its not the reverse idler because I installed a new one.

Just about all of them will if the engine will idle slowly enough, i.e., 400 RPM or so.

The rattle is caused by excessive end play of the countershaft assembly. This is caused by wear of the components on the countershaft, e.g., thrust washers, etc.

The rattle I hear in most 5-speed in this tractor is caused by the input shaft splines are loose where it connects to the shaft inside the transmission. Diesels are more likely to rattle because the torsional vibration is greater on diesel engines.
