front cover observation

We are restoring a Ford 600. I thought that I was cleaning some leftover paint off the engine front cover but the stripper released what I thought was paint only to reveal a crack in the front cover. It must have been some kind of sealer....now what to do.

Are thought front covers cast steel? I don't know the material so not sure if it can be welded on the crack.

If I have to remove the cover, the main crank pulley is there...one bolt in the middle that i assume goes to the crank but they 4 bolts around it...not sure how much I need to remove to get the front cover off. Look like oil pan front bolts are there too. Can I get the cover off without damaging that seal/joint?

Thanks in advance for any thoughs. I need to pull out my service manual too. Was hoping to be painting soon but now another delay!

It is cast alloy, not steel. your best bet would be to find a used one from someone who had a bad block. If you have to repair it cutting a vee with a Dremel cutting wheel and filling with epoxy should work well, but you need to get it clean all the way through first, so you need to remove it. Yes, you will need a new gasket to both the block and the pan, as well as a new crank seal. The seal rides on the pulley.

Just the center bolt will let the pulley slide off. You can pull it by loosening the pan bolts if someone didnt glue the gaskets on. There are 2 dowel pins near the bottom. Its up to you but I always replace mine with the older style that has a small 4 bolt cover that holds the seal.
