172 cid max temp?

I have a 172 and the temp when working hard gets up to 230° if I remember that is the max temp right? I did use a 195° thermostat last time I replaced it I think. Winter it never heats up even when covering the radiator sow thought the 195° thermostat would help.

Have you blow cleaned the radiator out from the fan side ? Dont wash it as it turns the silt to mud then it dries hard. You would be surprised at the amount of dust coming out of there. Are you using coolant instead of water . Straight water is bad for cooling systems ? You can buy a cheap infrared heat gun to check your radiator to see if its clogged. You can also check by just placing your hand on the fins in the front. It should be hotter at the top and get cooler near the bottom with no cold spots. Any cold spot is probably clogged. You can check your thermostat opening by boilng it in water. Is the fan belt tight, got a fan shroud? you can also buy an additive at auto parts stores that is supposed to run 25* cooler. Mine has just started getting warmer when working hard.

I put a 7 pound pressure cap on mine,
rather than the stock 4 pounder (I think).
If the coolant ever boils you lose cooling
ability. I think raising the pressure made
a huge difference. A modern radiator can
handle it just fine. I worried about the
water pump seal, but it has done fine. I
had an aftermarket 6 blade fan, but took it
off and put the factory fan back on. The 6
blade fan pulled so much air that it was
sucking grass and fuzzy seeds off the
ground and into my radiator. I use John
Deere pre-mixed coolant. Don't know if it
helps.
I think that the cooling system on the 172
inch tractors were not big enough for warm
weather. My tractor does fine on cool days,
but over 80 it struggles.
My tractor will get up to 220, but I think
it is good for it to be warm. Too cool is
worse. Remember, it is only the head that
is hot.

I had the same problem on my 960. I drained the radiator, flushed it out with vinager. used pressure washer to clean out the coils. put water and vinegar in it and ran it for 15 minutes, drained the radiator, let tractor cool down and added new antifreeze. started it up and temp got to about the top of the green line then temp dropped due to thermostat opening. 95 degree weather it go to just below the top of the green line. before it would go above the green line. fixed mine. might help yours.

You are fine with 195, but would not expect temperature to rise more than 15 over that, or 210 under full load.

I would guess your radiator is plugged up, inside outside or both.

It seemed to not over heat today maybe blowing out the radiator fixed it much junk in there for shire. Thanks

Buy you one of those red dot radar temp gauges, Walmart most places sell them, great item to have in the tool box,

Next time it gets hot or max temp you can put the red dot on the center of the radiator then around the sides of the radiator,

If it?s stopped up, the center will normally be much cooler than the sides of the radiator cooling fins,

If they are the same or almost the same then you have a bad thermostat, not opening properly sticking, etc,

Or you could have a bad water pump, the shaft can be spinning on the impeller or the impeller is eaten away from rust and harsh chemicals, I have even seen a bad coolant hose collapse and stop the flow of coolant

Anything but letting that little motor get hot and ruin the rings, cost my friend about $3000+ to get his tractor fixed after letting the motor get too
hot,
They are good engines, but cannot take getting too hot very well,
My old Ferguson I just leave the radiator cap loose coolant flows well,
Do you have the right psi radiator cap? That can make a difference most are 5-7 psi low compared to a car truck

I'm running a 4psi cap with 3 blade fan the radiator temp whose much hotter at the top. I have a cap from NAPA sow its possible its the wrong one.

The cap will NOT make it run any cooler, if you are seeing a high delta temperature across the radiator, it is probably plugged up.

4 PSI is 224 degrees, 7 PSI is 232 degrees, so either one is too low if you are operating at 230 degrees.

I put a 188F in my winter time feed tractor. The temp gauge on that tractor is white (safe) and red (OT). Temp rides right at white-red interface when warm
and working. Replaced the cap with that specified, somewhere around 4-6# forget.....goes on real easy with the light spring. Fan on my 2000D is 2 blade.
3000D and 3910D at least 4 blades. Manual specifies that when cold, like before you run it for the day, coolant level in the tank at the top of the radiator
should be just over the fins. The empty tank is for expansion so the coolant doesn't overflow. Obviously keeping the inside and outside of the system clean
is necessary.

I find the non-contact Infrared thermometer that HF has sold for as little as $19 is perfect for checking engine cooling. Checked the engine temp with it
running and engine warm (after the installation on the 3910) on the right side behind the deflector plate at the front of the head right at 188. Went around
to the other side where the drain cock is on the radiator lower tank and shot that and it was a cool 105. Wink!
