1965 Ford 3000 SOS input shaft seal query

Gday Gents,

I've got a '65 3000 that popped an oil seal on the input shaft right in front of the transmission pump.

I split it in two and replaced it with a new seal of the correct size, making sure it was clean and free of oil and grease, joined everything back up again and tested. It was working well for about 30mins then I started to do some brush hogging and after about 20mins of that, the same oil seal popped out losing all transmission fluid on to the ground.

So I again split the thing in two, and using the same seal, as it looked absolutely fine and it tapped in to the housing fine, I glued (sort of) the seal into place using Stagg jointing compound. Put the tractor back together and tested again few days later. 30mins of use just rolling around the farm and seemed to be working well. I hooked up the brush hog and was about 20mins in and the same bloody thing happened. Seal popped and lost $140 of oil! (that's the cheapest spec oil we can get down here).

Anyway to my question.... it seems to me that the seal is popping out due to excessive pressure! I could be wrong but it seems to make sense to my walnut sized brain.

Has anyone else experienced this or heard of it and the possible causes? Could it be the transmission relief valve? As far as I can tell it's at the other end of the system and if high pressure accumulates it bypasses the oil back to the sump.

The oil thats left remaining in the sump is perfectly clear and grit free, and all the gears seem to work ok..... except for reverse. The tractor reverses fine but when put into reverse it wants to creep forward until the inching pedal is let out.

I'm at a loss, I don't particularly want to glue a new seal in if it does indeed have a problem.

Any comments or suggestions greatly received.

Thanks
Mick

I'd be putting pressure gauges on. I think you're correct about something, possibly the pressure regulator valve, causing too much pressure. Perhaps it sticks when the transmission gets up to operating temps.

Your reverse is working normally. Nothing to worry about there.

I had the exact same problem once on a 3000 - pressures checked out fine. I solved it by purchasing a new seal, cleaning the OD of the seal
down to bare metal, and loctiting it in place. No problems after that.

As Larry said, reverse is fine - that's what they do.

Yes that was my next step Bern... I just wanted to run it by you guys to see if anything else may have been obvious.

Larry.... I don?t own a set of guages but I?m prepared to buy some just to have some piece of mind that it?s working ok. Is this something that you could do with one gauge or would it be necessary to buy multiple?..... I?m pretty sure the manual states 3.

Thanks again
