87 Ford 7710 Surging

I bought a 7710 tractor and it started surging and then quit. I replaced fuel filters and lift pump but still doesn't want to start. Has good flow of fuel to filters. I was told they had rebuilt the injector pump but not sure. Any ideas what it might be. Thank you for any help you can give us.

Classic out of fuel. Tell us what does "good flow to filters" mean to you? I have had this happen a number of times. Twice it was a nearly empty tank, once it was a fuel line blocked at a Tee. Once it was sucking air at a connection. Once I had two gaskets at the top of the filter. You need to check flow AFTER your filters, and get not just some coming out but a steady stream that will last for a goo 30 seconds.

It does sound like out of fuel issue.

On side note, when changing oil, make sure and change it in injector pump.

Have you changed the oil in the cam box of the pump? My 8000 would surge terribly and quit and when I drained the pump it was full of diesel.
Put fresh oil in and ran for about ten minutes, then drained and re-filled with fresh oil. Starts easy, no more surge. Hope this helps.

Does it have NAPA/WIX fuel filters by chance? Did you make the common mistake of placing an O-ring in the filter TOP OUTER groove? That's the fuel INLET passage and must be open. Many service calls to correct that mistake, the O ring placed there will either restrict the fuel flow or stop it completely..

IF... your on the bottom tank, this is a classic problem....fill it back up on the top and all is well.

Due to... gas line gettting cracks and no longer sucks fuel up very well. Also the side pump can be weak, but the cracked line is a very very very very common problem and is fixed by simply filling the top tank... Or replacing the rubber line from the bottom tank to the fuel pump. Note, the lines are metal on each end and rubber in the middle under the steering box... At least on the 5 tractors I have repaired.

Also seen primary filters stopped up/nearly full of water, and bad fuel pumps with valves stuck open or cracked diaphragms. If cracked diaphragm, you need to drain the injector pump and put in fresh oil.

You need to change the oil on the injector pump anyway as it never gets serviced.

Yup. I have been there and done that. When I got my 5000 and changed the fuel filter the first time. Mechanic buddy of mine stopped by and took him all of about 2 minutes to figure out what I did.

Thanks everyone for suggestions. It ended up be the kill switch lever. It was going to far forward and causing it to act like it was running out of gas. The way we figured it out is we got it started and went to shut it off and pushed on the kill lever and it started running perfect. Got lucky. Thanks again

Make sure and change the oil in the sump if that is not part of your service routine, and add it on next.
