Diesel filter change

Ford 2000; 3 cyl. diesel; 8/2 trans....I plan to change the motor oil and hydraulic fluids on my diesel tractor as well as the oil and diesel filters one day soon. The only question I have is the procedure to change out the diesel filter, a single filter. Would the process be: cut off tank valve, remove existing diesel filter, fill new filter with diesel and replace in filter housing, turn tank valve back on? Any other precautions to prevent air in the fuel lines or other woes? Should I let the tractor sit for a couple hours before cranking it to prevent air being sucked into the fuel lines?

Turn off the fuel and remove the filter, clean the bottom housing and place a new filter on the housing with the proper oring in place, make sure the upper oring is in the upper housings groove and not laying inside the filter. Install the filter/housing assembly empty of fuel, once installed loosen the bleeder bolt on the top on the filter housing and open the tank valve.
When fuel flows out the bleeder bolt with no air bubbles tighten the bleeder, wipe off the filter and check for leaks, if there's no leaks set the throttle half open and start the engine, it should start and run with no issues.
 
There is a bleeder screw on the top of the
filter.
Shut off fuel, change filter - you cant
prefill it - then turn fuel back on and open
bleeder till fuel spills out of bleeder.
That's why these diesels are such filthy
things with all the spillage and leakage of
the fuel everywhere.

Generally speaking manufacturers don't want filters prefilled. They understandably don't trust you to both fill through the inlet side AND to use a clean container.
 
My old diesel VW Jetta had a fuel filter about the size of a Fram PH8a filter and was a pita to fill with diesel fuel before installation. I'm happy to hear that the tractor filter does not need to be prefilled. Thanks again for the detailed instructions. Very helpful.
