Hard starting when hot

I have a 3230 that starts right up when it is cold, but if you shut it down and try to restart, it cranks forever before it will restart. Let it cool down and it starts right up. 3cyl diesel. Runs great if you can only get it started.

Does it crank good and FAST when warm. (Sometimes starters suffer from heat-related issues.)

If it is cranking as fast as it should, it's very possible the "head and rotor" in the injection pump are worn, allowing warm fuel to bypass at cranking speeds, so not enough pressure is developed to "pop" the injectors, no fuel gets injected, and there's no "start".

Is there any exhaust smoke at all while cranking when warm? If no smoke at all, that would pretty much confirm that diagnosis, IMHO.

Easy way to check pump is to cool it down good with water, then see if it starts.

Never pour water on a turning pump.

I carried a jug of water with me for two years then finally paid the piper. I have been very happy with the results of spending the $701.00.
