Ford 3000 wrong distributor cap?

I'm working on afarmer friend's 3000, and the distributor cap that was on it doesn't seem to fit. It's a little bigger diameter at the bottom than the distributor housing, and the square alignment peg doesn't seem to match the notch in the distributor body.

Yet this is a 3 cylinder cap. I'm just wondering -- was there some variation in distributors used for different years for the 3000?

I can see where somebody has in the past made a scratch mark on the outside of the cap, I guess to align it with the notch -- but the cap can be rotated even when snapped into place with the retainers.

Anybody got a clue what is going on here?

Thanks for your help

Missing dust cover between the distributor and cap? There?s only one choice of cap. It is either correct for a 3 cylinder Ford or it is for some other cylinder distributor.

Hi Rick,

Thanks, no the dust cap is present.

Well I guess I'll order a new one, and hope that it fits.

Very puzzling.
