Ford 640 sezied up

My father was out brush hogging today, He
was driving along and heard a odd noise and
then started smelling burning rubber, Then
it seized up, I cannot turn the fan by
hand? Could I have a bad water pump? How
would I tell?

Help please, it is stuck in the woods.

Justin

Loosen the belt, and try turning it. I'd bet on a seized generator or alternator before a seized water pump.

Just try turning the motor over, the fan is real loose it has side to side play in it, are there any tricks involved that I should know about when replacing the water pump

Your pump seal probably went out and trashed the pump bearing. There is a weep hole on a lot of water pumps that lets you know it needs to be changed. It might be a little lower on coolant. Some pumps come with the extension on them for the fan and some come without the extension. I would take my old pump with me to the parts place. You aint runnin water in there are you?

No I'm not running water, using green antifreeze, is there two types of water pumps a press on pulley and a bolt on pulley, can't tell which one I have. Does the sheet metal have to come off to replace it?? Also the belt I have has no teeth on it, when I look for a replacement the belt I see has teeth, what's the difference??

No but it will be easier access without sheet metal.[/color:f4cb871d46]

The cogged V-belt will follow a tighter radius on small diameter pulleys. They run cooler, last longer, and are slightly more efficient than a standard V-belt.[/color:f4cb871d46]

I forgot to say you can remove the pump with the fan on it but you DONT want to hit the radiator fins with the fan taking it out. You might get a friend to hold it still when you take the last bolt out, there are 3 bolts. Just keep your eyes on the fins.

So this is a press on pulley water pump, correct??

Yes, notice the bolts that attach the fan to the spacer or extension.

If it were a bolt on pulley, you would have much longer bolts that secure the fan, spacer and pulley to the hub.
