Draft Control Spring Seat and Spring Seat Support Question

Hello,

Pretty new to the Fords. I have the lift cover off of my 800 and have gotten to the adjustment part. Ill be using the alternate method from FO-20 and I don't want to do that before I know this is right first........

Here is my problem. Looking at page 314 of my I&T FO-20 manual. I am trying to figure out if part #3 "spring seat" goes on top of, or under part #4 "seat support"?

Might seem simple, and I know they are arranged in that order in the diagram FO263, but neither way seems just right.

If I put the seat support down over the spring seat, it looks like it would just bend when the bolts are tightened. The new seat support won't go all the way down over the wide end of the spring seat where the felt appears to go. Should it?

On the other hand, If I assemble it with the spring seat sitting on top of the thin metal spring seat support, it still doesn't seem just right. That big ol spring and seat snugged up against that thin metal spring seat support.

Appreciate a little confirmation.

Thanks!!!

There are 2 separate pieces of metal in the triangle shaped piece. IIRC the spring seat is a tight fit into that thin piece of the triangle shaped metal.

Steel triangle with dowel (6) goes on first, the felt washer (5) is next and then item (4) which is stamped sheet metal.

So, I would just maybe tap the thin metal spring seat support down over the "bell" end of the spring seat before bolting it down then?

That would make me end up with the felt washer sandwiched between the bell end of the spring seat and the draft control spring plate (with pin). Then the hole in the thin metal spring seat support would be tightly around the bell end of the heavy spring seat that goes up inside the heavy draft control spring.

My thin metal spring seat support is new, as is the plate with the pin, but the spring seat that goes up into the heavy spring is not. I wondered if the spring seat would fit inside the thin metal spring seat support if they were both new, but didn't want to force it and find out it was wrong.

Picture is worth a thousand words......

So the green part of the seat would end up inside the yellow hole in the seat support then?

Im pretty sure thats correct and the felt goes into the inside of the bell. Someone on here called the felt worthless, maybe rubber would have been a better choice. I think the felt lets moisture pass through when system heats up good. If they are kept in a good dry barn (most old timers barned things) the felt does a good job.

I actually put some oil on my felt already. Only because that was always what I was taught that felts were for. LOL. On my 37 Deere B, you soak the felt axle seals in oil before you install them. Different, I know, but don't see what it would hurt on this one. I also have lots of anti seize on my draft control plunger threads already. My Dad taught me to use that stuff when I was a kid.

I'll assemble it with the bell inside the sheet metal support. It does make more sense to have the heavy spring seat touching the heavy support plate (with pin), not riding on top of that sheet metal part.

But hey, us noobs don't know for sure, and doubt really bugs us.

Thanks,

I tapped that sheet metal support down onto the spring seat and assembled it again. Much better! Now it seems right. Did the adjustments, now I just have to clean out the center section of the 800 and put it back together. Fingers crossed that I got everything right.

Thanks everyone!
