Correct clutch for Model 40303 sn#131583, advice on split...

I have a 1961 Ford 4000 Light Industrial, model 40303, sn# 131583. It looks like I need a new clutch. This would be a new project for me.
never split a tractor or replaced a clutch. Here are my questions:

1) Can I know ahead of time what clutch to order? My IT manual lists the 9,10, heavy duty and dual clutches as possibilities.
2) What am i getting myself into? I'm fairly mechanical, but splitting a tractor isn't something I've done before.
3) I have a rolling floor jack and a cherry picker, as well as the normal sockets and wrenches, etc. Anything I need that is special to this
project/

You can search the archives for old posts by clicking on Modern View and type your subject in the search bar. When the page resets, hit search again and it will pull up old posts. These tractors arent too bad. You can split one with the hood on it also, its actually the easiest way to me. I use a strap under the oil pan,up beside the hydraulic pump (place a wood block there and a bigger block where the starter area is). That keeps the strap off your hood. Use a chain hoist for everything in front of the tranny and a comalong for the steering box, lifting both at the same time. Then you lower the front of your tranny just enough to clear the stud that usually holds the throttle bellcrank. Then you can start pushing the rearend back. Lower your arms and drain the hydraulics first.

That's a 4 speed, therefore it's not a dual clutch. You can go to NH's parts store and figure out the rest of it just as easily as I can.

According to my I&T manual, the double
clutch is about whether the PTO and clutch
disengage and engage separately based upon
the extent of travel of the clutch pedal. I
don"t see anything about 4 vs 5 speed.

The dual clutch with the separate clutch plate for the PTO is called live PTO, which was only available on the 5 speed transmission. The 4 speed was only ever available with a trans driven (non-live) PTO, and so the 4 speed only ever had a single clutch.

No. The 2 stage clutch mates to a transmission with 2 input shafts, one inside the other. The 4 speed has just one input shaft.

(quoted from post at 17:59:35 08/07/18) But is it possible to use the two stage clutch in a retrofit?

I'll echo what Sean and the rest of us have said. The answer is positively, [b:5b7f768a4a][u:5b7f768a4a]NO[/u:5b7f768a4a][/b:5b7f768a4a][u:5b7f768a4a][/u:5b7f768a4a]!!!

A lot of guys tend to block the rear and roll the front, perhaps because the front looks smaller. It is dangerous to roll the front because of the possibility of a wedge coming loose. In order to do it safely use the HoboNC rolling bracket attached to the side of the rear housing. The large size of the rear tires give you mechanical leverage in rolling it.

Thanks for the insight. Its nice to know why, as opposed to "no", or "you can't do that". That is what teachers told me in school and I found out a lot of them were full of hooey.
