600 Starter Switch

My starter switch would not work Saturday. The switch is the push
switch on top of transmission. Was just wondering if it could be stuck or
just worn out. I take it that it screws out. Any tricks to getting it
out or could something inside just be stuck that a little tap might fix.

I temp. by-passed the switch by using a car push button switch in order
to finish bush hogging, then ran out of time.

Nothing that easy. Remove top cover of transmission and find nut, etc. under it.

By "wouldn't work", do you mean it wouldn't push down?
You probably already know that it is a neutral safety switch too.
Transmission has to be in neutral for it to push down.
Might try moving the shifter around and putting it back into neutral.

As JMOR said, the cover has to come off to replace it.
If you have to do that, it's not too bad. A new gasket, put on dry.

Removal procedure is different depending on which transmission
you have, but they have a nut on the bottom with a captive washer.

As always, JMOR and Royce gave excellent advice - Just wanted to add a small bit of info to help with your troubleshooting.

Before removing the shifter cover, make sure the transmission is in neutral and verify wiring continuity by using a screwdriver to ground the switch wire terminal to transmission cover right at the starter switch. Clip a test light to the non-grounded battery terminal and the probe starter switch terminal lug. The light should come on as you depress the starter switch.

If you verify the switch is bad and have to remove the shifter cover, watch for the spring and ball under the tab of the shift cover toward the rear (7234 in photo). They can stick to the cover and possibly fall into the transmission if you're not looking for them.

Note: Parts diagram is for N series but very similar for 600 4- speed.

Once you have the button in hand, remove the little ring that holds the button together, clean up the inside of the of the button and you will have beat the parts man out of a few bucks, BTDT

Thanks guys for all the info. After reading and looking
at the diagram, I have decided to by-pass the push down
starter switch. I don't want to chance screwing anything
up removing that top cover.
I think I can by-pass it for $10.00 realizing I will not
have the safety feature.
