Something to be concerned with???

I have been working on some of this Ford 5000 I recently purchased. I am working on the hydraulics. The lift arms didn't work so I removed thed the top on the hydraulics and found one of bolt holes on the lift cylinder itself was cracked. Is this something that could prevent the hydraulics from working properly or is it something that's not that big of deal and should be fine? The relief valve that is screwed into the end of the cylinder housing was stuck closed and I'm thinking this is why the lift didn't work. This crack is located by the relief valve. Any opinions greatly appreciated.

There should be two dowels that locate that cylinder to the cover. As long as they are tight and in place, I don't think I'd get too excited about the crack. That said, the bolt looks to be too long - I wonder if that bolt got side loaded when it hit the protrusion and had anything to do with the crack, as I've never seen that happen before.

The crack certainly wouldn't have anything to do with the lift not operating, nor would a relief valve that was stuck closed. If the lift doesn't work at all, and yet the remote hydraulics function normally, suspect an unload valve that is stuck in the dump position.

Thanks for the info. Yes the auxiliary hoses do work but the lift cylinder does not. The lift hasn't worked in along time but strangely the other day it would go up and down but wouldn't stop stop mid-range, Either up or down. In the manual there are several references to special tools to work on the lift cylinder. Are these really required to take this apart if I am just cleaning and putting new orings in? I purchased a lift cylinder o-ring kit and lift cover gasket to freshen the hydraulics up.

Most of the tools called out are for adjustment purposes, which are not needed it all you're doing is cleaning and installing new seals.

I took the lift cylinder out and welded the crack up. As I was taking the cylinder out I noticed that the o-rings between the cylinder and lift cover were flat like a rubber washer and most of the new ones I have are round. Were the originals round at one time and just flattened out over the years? I'm thinking no,they look like they were made flat and never were round. If not are the round o-rings in the rebuild kit intended to replace the flat rubber washers?
