861 ford tractor

I recently aqquired an 861 ford tractor with a 172 c.i. gas engine and 5 speed transmission with live pto. Ive got the tractor running excellently. It has been sitting for quite a while. When I crank the tractor cranked and try to put it in gear it grinds pretty goos unless you idle it completley down it will eventually go in gear .it stops when clutch is depressed and the two stage clutch for the live pto works correctly.when clutch depressed all the way down ,the pto disengages, but if I want to put in a higher gear i have to idle all the way down the get the transmission back in gear, and sometimes shut it off, place it in gear and when I let off of the clutch it takes off norm/ally. I have changed all of the fluids in trans, rear end, and hydraulic system. does anyone have any suggestion as to what may be going on

Sounds like the traction clutch is sticking/failing.

Try working it a bit to see if things improve or worsen.

make sure that the drain hole in the bellhousing is open. rear main or tranny input shaft oil can make the clutch sticky and drag. you can pull the starter and hose down the bellhousing with a can of brake cleaner with the red straws and let it drip out, then run around the farm a while and see what ya get.
