960 PTO question

Bought a 960 a couple of weeks ago. Hooked up a bush hog and mowed down a pasture and all worked fine. Tonight I hooked up a haybine and I cannot engage the PTO. The lever won't move. It worked fine while mowing last week. I disconnected the haybine PTO shaft, and I can turn the PTO on the tractor by hand, but cannot engage. Granted, this is still a very new tractor to me (had an 8n for many years), so maybe I'm missing something obvious. Any quick suggestions? I was hoping to mow some hay this evening.
 
So, with engine off, and someone slow hand spinning the pto stub, you can't get the engagement lever to move?

If this is correct, pull the shifter plate for a look see. You will be able to see what the lever moves back and forth with the cover off. Hand check it.

Did you hit anything fantastic with the mower? Did it have shear protection?
Us it a new repop pto assy, or an original.

with the tractor turned off it should move freely. if not your probably going to have to look internally. if it does then start the tractor with it engaged and then shut the pto off and try to engage it. let us know your results.
 
Well... Someone suggested I give it (the PTO lever) a little hit with a hammer, and the "hit it with a hammer" technique worked (used a rubber mallet). Had to give it a little whack each time I needed to move it. Still couldn't move it by hand. That worked for now, but I hope I don't have to hang a rubber mallet on the fender of my new tractor permanently LOL. Anyway, the hay got cut, although with the delay, I was losing light fast.

If the lever will move back and forth with a "whack of a rubber mallet" what might you suggest to make it easier to move?

Did I mention it was my first time mowing hay? For years I had a neighbor cut and bale, and I raked, hauled and unloaded. When my neighbor could no longer do it, I bought the haybine last year, but my father in law who grew up farming has been doing the cutting and baling.

This time, I was determined to use my "new" tractor and do it myself. Once I figured out the right ground speed and PTO speed, it went pretty well.

Now I need to figure out if I'm brave enough to try baling in a couple of days...

take a couple minutes and open the
round side plate where PTO lever
is ,maybe a little look around
inside you can figure it out. If
it takes a little tap with a
hammer it can't be too messed up
in there. Lol. Post back ,let us

Does it look like it has recently had the rear PTO seal installed? If someone drove the shaft into the bearing assembly they could have distorted the ends of the internal splines a little making it not slide good.
 
Just be careful and think before doing, a lot of machinery has chewed a lot of people parts up. Make sure your Pto shields are all there.
 
The end of the spline could have a twist , bur, or be chewed a bit.

It might have been slipping out a while and the prev owner replaced the bearing or broke ring and didn't dress the spline, might be a twist from a hard hit.

If you aver pull the shaft, check the end. Might wear in, might need a file, etc.
 

not unusual to have a twisted pto shaft or even the sliding coupler can be twisted/burred in extreme cases.... If the tractor ever hit something big while engaged, it can twist it. If ever the rear retainer was damaged and allowed the shaft to move back and fourth, it can have a damaged end as other said. if it happens to be a bur in the very end of the shaft, it can be filed clean. If twisted, will require a shaft swap. Also examine end play and the bearing retainer. Not a difficult job, but will require draining fluid.
 
Thanks everyone. Today I went out with the "mallet" and didn't need to use it. The lever was still a little stiff, but I was able to move it by hand. I know the previous owner didn't really use the PTO for anything for the last few years. Maybe it's just a little stiff from non-use. We'll see how it goes from here.
