Thoughts on aftermarket fuel pump for a Ford 4600 diesel

Just curious as to whether anyone has any thoughts on the quality of aftermarket fuel pumps specifically one to replace the original Lucas CAV fuel pump on my 1981 Ford 4600 diesel with the 201 engine. I have looked into it a little on the web and they all appear to be near $500! Does that seem about right to most people? Are they any good? Some of them are made in Romania of all places and the others are probably from China I would guess. The studs that hold the top cover of the original Lucas pump broke when attempting to loosen the nuts and hence the need for a replacement.

Attached is a pic of the original before I broke the top cover bolts. This is my first diesel tractor and I am still figuring it out. I would be curious to hear if you have any input on the matter. Many thanks!

Dieseltech: I've got a Cav pump to send to you a little later after I recover from some other repair cost, it's off my 4000, the cover gasket split and started leaking but the tractors had a slight miss a idle on first start for several years.
My 4500 is down for a transmission rebuild soI pulled the new pump off of it and stuck it on the 4000, now the 4000 doesn't miss at idle on first start so I know it's a pump issue, pump was rebuilt 18 years ago.

You can see the fuel streaming off the bottom of the pump.

Gasket pushed out.

The pump on my 4000SU is wet so I'm guessing the cover gasket is leaking on it as well.
It was rebuilt 8 years ago and runs good so I may try tackling that one myself.

I got water in a pump locking up the head and twisting the shaft off, pump wasn't fixable, it was on one of my least used tractors so I bought one of those off shore $500 pumps.
Just swapped it over to my 4000 due to it's pump leaking.
50 hours on it and running good for far but I'll put the Lucas pump back on after it's repaired.

In your case I'd have the original pump repaired.

I haven't heard anything bad about those pumps.
You really don't need a new one.. you can fix it yourself for about 20.00.
Just google CAV top cover leak.. or throttle shaft leak..
The instructions will help you get the cover off, what to watch out for & the stud replacement is self explanatory.

I have done a few top cover reseals, like thepumpguysc said the info is out there on how to do it. It may seem intimidating at first, but after you do it it's all not that hard. The main thing is getting the fuel shut off lined up, and making note of what holes the governor spring is in should it get unhooked (which I didn't do on the governor spring on the very first one I did, but thepumpguysc got me back on track). Now when I do a top cover seal replacement job I don't even take the injector pump off the engine if there is nothing in the way of taking the top cover off..
