Cavitation Worries?

Ford 2000; 3 cyl. diesel; 8/2 trans; 1970 model....recently bought a low hours diesel and want to top off or maybe replace the radiator coolant when I replace the engine oil and hydraulic fluids. Do I need to worry about cavitation issues with this diesel tractor engine? If so, what specific additive or coolant should I be using? Thanks.

Technically yes, you should worry. That said, the odds that a 1970 model 2000 will actually cavitate is quite low. The problem is more likely
to affect newer, turboed engines as opposed to yours. IMHO, there's something about the quality of the iron that Ford used in the 1980s that
makes them more susceptible to this issue.

Any commercially available "diesel rated" anitfreeze will have the necessary treatment package already in it to inhibit cavitation erosion.
That's about the best you can do to help prevent this from happening in a Ford, because if it ever does, get your wallet out.

Thanks for the information. The current coolant is green so I'm assuming it might be regular automotive antifreeze. It's up to just below the tops of the cooling fins of the radiator so is clearly a bit low. Since I don't know the history of maintenance on the tractor, am thinking I'll drain the coolant entirely and refill with a diesel antifreeze that is up to spec. Will keep an eye on the coolant level to make sure I don't have leaks. No evidence of any so far.

Thanks.

They make a coolant additive you can use with standard antifreeze, comes in a 16 once bottle, for that cooling system I'd use half the bottle.

Fleetguard DCA4, NAPA Kool are a couple.

Picked up some Fleetguard diesel coolant today at NAPA. Now gotta wait for the rain to quit so I can drain and fill the radiator without getting wet.

By the way...an interesting video explaining diesel cavitation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lm3wFHmq5Q Lots of video explanations on YouTube.
