3400 Ignition

It has come time to tune up my 1970 3400. I have a new cap and rotor, plugs and plug wires on hand. The guy at NAPA says he can get new points and condenser in a couple of days. $15 for points, $9 for condenser. (seems high to me) Maybe it's time to upgrade to the point-less system. $100 on this site. Put this product on my boat several years ago without a doubt better power. What say the experienced?

I put the pertronix ignition and coil on my 1970 3000 one year ago. Works great and no problems. Was also very simple to install.

Have had the one from this site for 10 yrs on our 3000, along with the new coil also offered. Haven?t touched it since then, always fires, even at well below freezing. Probably saying the obvious, but I?ll immediately buy another if this one ever gives out.

I think it's worth the money.
I put pertronix in a 3000 12?-14? years ago. Ran it for about 7 years. Sold the tractor to a guy and he'd call me for advice on the tractor or implements and such and I'd always ask about the electronic ignition. He sold it about 2 years ago so I've lost track of the tractor. In the years I knew it the distributor cap never came off once.
I have a 3cyl 4000 gasser that doesn't get run often. It seems like every time I want to start it I have to run a piece of brown grocery bag through the points to clean them. As you probably know, 3 cyl points are a pia to get to.
I recently bought the Pertronix kit from this site and will install it the next time I go up to my property.
Set em and forget em!

I have put them in a forklift and a tractor. If you have unlimited time to be able to retune or chase problems every other year stay with points. I am very happy with the electronics.

as difficult as 3 cyl points are to get to.. it's at least worth thinking about.

all depends on how much you actually have to dink with your points, and much of that deals with your climate, storage and usage.

I'd run new wires to that module... just saying..

Thanks U D. I have always considered your input valuable. I'll order the kit today. I'm also considering getting rid of the Holley carburetor. Bruce

While installing new points in my 1968 2000 3 cyl, I thought to do so would be a fitting punishment for a petty criminal. If the offense is more serious, introduce deer flies while in the process.

Lol.
Great mental picture with the deer flys.
Add to that the Hot sun - which is when the deer flys come out and the sweat trickling down your butt crack and you'd have a real form of punishment.
Oh, and maybe a wood tick crawling up your leg :)
KV Bruce - Thanks.
