641workmaster 1957 wont start

Just used it a few days ago but wont start. drained gas out and added fresh. Cleaned all the spark plugs as well. I did not check all the spark plugs but saw a spark
on one when I turned it over. Could see that I was getting fuel in the carburetor as well. I pulled it to the top of the hill and popped the clutch. It fired for a
minute and then lost power. I have been having trouble with fuel leaking into the carburetor when it sits so I have been turning the fuel off when I am done with it.
Somewhere around here I have a rebuild kit but have been putting it off since I am busy and have not done it before so might have trouble.

Should I check the voltage at the coil or spark plugs in case it is too low? What should it be? Any other ideas of where to start.

Also I have an electronic ignition around here somewhere that I bought awhile back. Did not see any directions though. Do you all recommend installing? it anyone have
directions? I bought it from this web site several years ago. My tractor has been switched to 12 volt system

Thanks

Drain the carb; plug at the base. May have water in it. Float may be heavy; pin hole or what ever.

You really need to define it is spark or fuel. Short snort of ether will tell if you have spark.

Get it running with points before converting. Otherwise you are just adding more variables. There is no point in trying to measure spark voltage. You said that you have determined that you have spark. Were the plugs wet when you removed them? if not you no fuel. Remove the plug from the bottom of the carb turn the gas on, and see if it runs a steady stream FOR TWENTY SECONDS.

Should have mentioned that I tried ether with no results. I don't usually use ether but thought it would help figure the situation out. I did take one of the spark plugs out and saw a spark when I turned it over. That is why I was wondering if maybe it just was not a good enough spark or maybe I should have checked all the plugs. I will drain the carb as you all recommended.

Thanks

Plugs that spark in the open may not do so under the pressure of compression. You need to have a good fat blue spark that will jump a half inch or better gap from the plug wire to a good ground. An orange or yellow spark that won't jump that gap is a good indicator that there is a problem with your ignition. So is the fact that it won't pop even a little on ether.

if it won't bang with ether, then either it has no spark, or it's not getting air because valves are stuck. even orange weak spark will pop ether.
