640 pops out of first gear

My '55 Ford 640 pops out of first gear when going down steep inclines. What should I be looking at to figure out a repair?

Not uncommon and symptomatic of wear in transmission parts.

That said, you MAY be able to improve the situation by adjusting the shifting rails and/or replacing the shift rail detent balls and springs.

Don't hold your breath but doing so is neither difficult nor expensive so worth a try.
