Saw this 820 with a 6 cyl diesel engine from a 6000 commander transplanted into it at the Walloon Lake Flywheeler show. Talked with the builder, the trans and starter bolted right up. He did stretch the hood sheetmetal and the radius rods. Note the belt was off to drive the injector pump so tractor was not in running condition.

Now that you say that about the belt, I wasn t thinking right. The injector pump has to be mechanically driven so it stays timed correctly. What should the belt be driving on the engine?

One would think so because they look very similar on the outside, until you do the math. 172 / 4 = 43 cubic inches per cylinder. 43 x 6 = 258 cubic inches. Problem is, a 6000 diesel engine is 242 cubes.

I took a closer look at the details. A 172 engine is 3.90 bore x 3.60 stroke. A 242 engine (6000 diesel) is 3.62 bore x 3.90 stroke. I'm guessing the engineers were looking for more lugging ability with the longer stroke.

It's closer to the 601 diesel (144 cid) than 801 (172 cid). I put 6000 piston in a 144 cid block and cut about .100 off the deck of the block to make the piston reach the top of the deck. The wrist pin is the same size for the 6000 and the 601 diesel and the rod and main journals are the same diameter for both engines.
