There's a sod farm near me that has a more modern setup of that. I'm not sure what tractor it's mounted on, some modern looking CUT. It's been a while since I've seen it but I think the tractor was either red or orange and the sod harvester was mostly black with some white.

There was a unit like that sold at auction not far from me a couple of years ago.
I bid it up to $1650 but it went much higher.
It was rather like a Rube Goldberg contraption and I suspect it would have been noisy and vibrated a lot.
It was about 10' wide. I just wanted the tractor. Seller said if I got it I could come up with a torch and cut all the junk off of it in the lot it was in. It was like a traveling junkyard.

A very interesting weight setup on that machine - you're right about it being a contraption.

I see those rigs by me all the time. A lot of the black dirt farmers in my area have found its more profitable for them to sell sod then vegetables.
