A little surprise from my 2000

I started to rake some hay yesterday and the thing just died. Thought I bumped the key with my knee (happens often) but it would not start. Checked fuel flow (good) and ignition. Had voltage at coil on both sides. Took the coil off and it checked OK so I went to the distributor. The points were pretty well gone. Thing had been running beautifully for years and just stopped cold. I put Blue Streak points in it about fifteen years ago, maybe more. I always used them and say you can forget them for ten years. I guess it was a little longer than that.

My point is that I never saw points quit so abruptly. Usually I'll see missing or hard starting for a while first. This time it started instantly and quit after a few minutes.

Probably the condenser not the points, unless the points are very worn, or broken. Blue Streak made good parts, now they sell under the Standard brand.

Thanks for the "solution" always good to hear the cause.

could be they got contaminated

or the key got left on with the points not quite closed,, where they arced across ...

Either way, you got your money out of them.

once you file off the harden tungsten, they will corrode faster and faster, till you have to clean them every time you run the tractor.

Got new points today, Standard/Blue Streak. They're made in Mexico now but still the same and when they were USA made and still under $20. B**tchy part is changing them out. Easier to pull the distributor than try to work under the manifold.

My dad used to work on the local propane delivery trucks, they would do that, run run run, then just die, change points and going again.

Hi Mike do have that parts number for the
points and where did you buy them napa? I need to do the same ..................Larry

Blue Streak, now Standard. FD8183V. That's for a 3 cyl. Ford with a Motorcraft distributor. NAPA will give you Echlin brand. I get these from an independent parts store near me.
