Ford 4000 help

63- 4 cylinder gas. I can run the tractor and use it and temp gauge shows in the green.when I shut the tractor off in about a couple minutes it will start to gurgle and boil. With out starting the tractor you can turn key switch and check the temp gauge and it’s in the red. Is this normal ? I just replaced the temp gauge. I just bought the tractor and looks like a new radiator.

Short answer - Yes Normal.
First off the original gauge was just a mechanical gauge not electric but that is fine. Just that the rest of us don't have to turn the key back on to see the temp go up!

Think of what you have here, a large piece of cast iron heated up by burning gasoline inside it. It is being cooled by water/antifreeze pumped thru it and by the cool air coming in and hot gases being expelled. When you shut it down, you stop all the cooling. There is residual heat. The parts that were being cooled the best equalize with the rest of the parts (your temp probe was in the coolant).

Now I will guess that most of us will not have it boil over. Unlike modern cars, this radiator system does not have an overflow tank, so you do not fill the radiator to the top but just enough to cover the core when the fluid is cold.

In many modern cars the same thing happens. If you shut down without letting it cool off, the electric fan will kick on AFTER you shut off the car. They put a warning sticker under the hood as a warning.

One thing more, many of the later tractor manuals will recommend that after working the tractor hard, you should rest the tractor at a fast idle (~1000 RPM) for a couple minutes to allow it to cool. This is really important when dealing with tractors with a turbo charger. I personally like to take that time to hose off the dust and junk that is on my tractor. I then like to use an air hose after I shut it down to blow out the radiator and alternator.

also make sure your running a 50% mix of antifreeze, and have a 6lb radiator cap that holds pressure. however this time of year, if running at full load, you need to run it down as said for 4 to five minutes to let the system drop back down before you turn it off... i always do this returning to the barn, and by the time i get back, its dropped a lot of excess heat. this is even more true on turbo engine!!!!!
