961 front end pinion

Not sure if it's called a pinion(?) Or
what. Anyway, noticed the front had started
leaking some oil pretty good around the
front pedestal mount. I haven't used the
tractor in a few months but others have
been using it a lot. Jacked up the front
and the pedestal all but fell right out.
Popped the top cover off. Looks like it's
missing a bearing around the top pinion (?)
Nut? Not sure exactly what needs to happen
or if parts are available. Hopefully the
pics will help explain.

here's a link to the New Holland parts store exploded view of your pedestal - https://partstore.agriculture.newholland.com/us/parts-search.html#epc::mr57661ar258645 - the seal may be a problem -

Your bottom bearing might still be good. Your top bearing should have a number on it when you pull it out from the top. It may have trashed your seal with that top bearing out. I know even the stub pedestals are heavy to put back in by yourself. I think some put cornhead grease in them.

I dont know if you have a felt seal at the very bottom but I had one that was pretty much shot. I have no idea what the original one looked like but there are 2 notches in the bottom of the piece thats under the big bearing for some reason. Does anyone know what they are for? I know where you can have a felt seal made to fit anything. That is a strange way that they sealed that gearbox.

Thanks! That's exactly what I needed to
see. Has anyone here ever filled the front
with cornhead or some such greese? I know
some guys that have done it in their
Deere's but those seem set up quite
different. Thinking maybe I can get the new
upper bearing in and fill with grease?
