hot SOS trans

I need some advise from some of you ford guys. I have an early 4000 4 cylinder gas with SOS I use for running a finish mower. Is it normal for the transmission housing to get so hot it will burn you. I have to wear long pants when I use it. Thanks in advance for your help.

I also have a '62 4000 D SOS. I don't think Ford had discovered oil coolers at that time. Mine gets hotter than hell also, but it doesn't affect anything. I especially notice it on tractor rides rocking along @ 20 MPH or better. I've wondered if I might have a band a little to tight, but I don't think so.

Yes, they get hot. There is no oil cooler.

When I get started on my 64, 4 cylinder 4000 retirement project, I plan to reroute the filter discharge line outside of the case and to a cooler mounted in front of the radiator before returning the oil to the sump.

I will probably eliminate the small filter beneath the top cover and replace it with a remote mounted filter at the same time.

140 degrees is hot to you and me, but normal operating temp for many different transmissions out there. Unless it's smoking or discoloring the paint, I would not get too excited.

I seriously doubt that . . . and I hope you never really find out how hot hell is!

You can always go in the winter when it's freezing over.
