Ford 3000 ID and a shifting issue?

I just bought a ford 3000 that are believed to be a 1968 model. The serial number begins with an a. From everything I find this means it was manufactured in Belgium. I find that hard to believe. It has the 8-speed tranny and live PTO. Not sure about the diff lock yet. I'll get some pics up as soon as I can.

The numbers are:

6J27C
J286
A141-855

It has a shift issue where the shifter comes out of the shift forks and jams up. It has the stamped steel shift plate. The fellow I bought it from said he was told that the shifter plate assembly was worn and needs replacing. Anybody have experience with this? I've searched and searched and haven't found anything posted about a similar issue.

It jammed up on him when he was trying to back it off the trailer, but he was snatching and jerking the shifter when it happened and he had the shifter plate bolted on loosely like he'd just pulled it off and had just started the bolts in the holes. I pulled the plate off and got it lined back up. The end of the shifter and the shift forks don't look too bad to me. I haven't had time to mess with it much yet, but in the short time I've messed with it, if you're careful and shift it gently it does OK.

Congratulations, Those are the controls for a dual spool remote hydraulic valve. You can control 2 hydraulic circuits (2 lines each) with those 2 levers.
You can see one set of lines to the left of the valve in your picture.

I believe this to be a common issue. As the shifters wear, the balls on the end pop out of place.
Some people weld them us and grind them into shape. If you want new, I believe that the parts are readily available.
This site has the shifters for $85.56. Look under Drive train parts for a 3000. you may also need a gasket.

The A141-855 is a serial number. The A at the beginning says that it was assembled at the plant in Antwerp Belgium.

6J27C and J286 both appear to be date codes. They apppear ot be 1966 date codes. My guess would be that the transmission was assembled on June 27 and the tractor was assembled on June 28, or possibly it was near the end of the assembly line late on June 27 and got stamped with that date, but it didn't actually get finished until the next day so they stamped it again.

There should be an additional number stamped farther up into the rough part of the casting that would be the model number, but on those early European thousand series models they didn't always have all of the numbers and some were in the wrong place, like on the flat spot on the left hand side of the tractor instead of the right side.

(quoted from post at 07:05:58 07/11/18) Is not the small lever draft/position control?

Yes, I am pretty sure that you are correct. The smaller one is the draft/position control selector lever. The larger one appears to be the handle for a single spool remote valve that controls a single hydraulic circuit that is a double acting circuit. Although it may be a dual spool remote valve with the second handle missing. I would have to see it from another angle to be sure.

(quoted from post at 16:59:35 07/11/18) "J" is the code for ninth month. They did not use "I".

Yes, I should have typed September instead of June. I don't know where my brain is half the time these days.

P7008A isn't anything meaningful that I am aware of. Look on the very botom of the engine block on the flat rail just above the oil pan on th eright dside. The engine serial number should be stamped in there. If it is a 3000 then it should start with an "N" or a "C". If it's a 1966 3000 it would start with an "N". Below is a picture of where the engine serial number is located. The picture is of a 4 cylinder 5000 series engine, but the serial number is in the same location on a 3000 series.

The ESN is:

About my shifting issue, I ordered a new shifter from the YT store. I opened it up and pulled the one off the tractor and someone has already replaced it. The one on the tractor is identical and the ends of the levers measure the same as the new one. I did find that there were three gaskets under the plate. The bottom one was green rubber @ .030" thick and then there were two orange gaskets made of some sort of reinforced rubber @ .040" thick. I HOPE that maybe the shifter was just too high with almost 1/8" of gasket under it. I didn't have time to try it. I also changed the oil so, we'll see tomorrow hopefully.

The "N" at the beginning of the engine serial number says that it was made for a 3000 series tractor. The D in the second position says that it is a diesel engine. The next 6 digits are just the sequential numeric part of the serial number. I'm not sure what the J166 at the end is though. Is it separated from the rest by a wider gap?

I have no reference material saying what the J166 after the engine serial number might mean. It might be something to designate specific design changes or non-standard parts used internally when the engine was built, like maybe it had a defect in the original cylinder bore and so was bored over and had oversized pistons installed at the factory, or maybe it was sleeved, but those are only guesses.
