861 PTO shaft play

Just realized that my PTO shaft has a good amount of play sliding in and out. From quick research it sound like I should replace the assembly with a new one. Has anyone ran into this problem before and what should I look for when I am doing the replacement?

1, make sure that it is your shaft sliding in and out, and not a clipped or pinned on ORC that is loose.

2, if there is more than about 1/8" MAX play in and out, then you for sure need to pull it to address it.

3, Yes, you can simply buy a new 110$ assembly, clean the gasket surfaces, change oil in the 2 rear compartments and snatch and swap.

4, Or, you can pull the old one and look to see if it is something simple like a broke split ring, slipped wear ring, etc. At a minimum, install a new seal, and if it is the wear ring, replace or re-set, etc. If it is a popped out but not broke split ring, look at the channel, sometimes the edges round and it's a loss as it simply won't stay in during thrust forces. lastly, check the bearing.

5, From a time/work/$ point of view, if you pull the old one and the splines are a little worn, the bearing and seal and wear ring are bad, and/or the split ring grooves are damaged, then yes, it is easier to buy a replacement.

6, if it is just a seal and wear ring, then you are in for an hour of work to drain, fix and reinstall, plus about 20$ in parts
