Hello,
Helping a friend with what he says is a 62? 4000.
172 diesel. with .030 oversize pistons, sleeveless.
Anyone know where these pistons can be purchased?
And/or another option to get his tractor up and running?

thanks,
David

Are his piston ring lands broke? Are any of the skirts broken? I have found a set on fleabay before. You can buy new ones but they are pricey. You can always bore and sleeve if your pistons are good.

TY for the reply.
So far he has 2 pistons out and they both have broken ring lands.
Sleeveing this block would require removing the block and sending to a shop. Correct?

STEINER TRACTOR says they can special order engine kits for the 4000 -try them. nnalert use to, but they are now called CT Farm & Country and don't offer much nowadays.

Can you feel the ring ridge at the top or is it negligible. We have an old 4000, we called it Fireball- caught fire twice. I didnt think that engine would ever give up the ghost but it finally wouldnt fire up. If your ring ridge at the top isnt too bad, you might do good with just new pistons and rings and bearings and a valve job. I believe a lot of parts stores will rent you a ridge reamer if it need it

Dont forget to hone it, I think they rent those too. The manual says to really wash out the bores good after honing. You should get a manual.

More than likely he'll have to have it sleeved back to standard size and get new standard pistons.

Yes the engine has to be removed and sent to a machine shop to have the sleeves installed.

If you have not found any I will look and see if I have some. I have a few new old stock pistons that I purchased a few years ago.

Here are the numbers I found:

40306D

166726 <>

The "1" is questionable.

"<>" is a diamond stamped on the flat boss.

Cannot feel a ridge on the 2 cylinders that have the pistons removed.

Thanks,
David

We have not located any pistons.

Sorry I haven't gotten back with you sooner but I have been spending all my time with my father in the hospital. I don't know without looking what bore these pistons are. Do you know what bore a standard block is? Or do you have apart number for the pistons you are looking for?

Floyd

40306D is a 4000 light industrial made in 1961-1962 with the Select-O-Speed transmission and the "Deluxe" 540/1000/ground speed PTO.

166726 would be a 1962 year serial number.

Numbers I found on the piston:
.030
B9NN 6110-6

I googled that number and nothing came up.
Thanks for your help.
