601 PTO diagnosis

Thank you all for the excellent help in identifying the model 601 that I just purchased. I was able to get a manual for it and now have a better understanding of what I have here.

The main issue it came with is a non working PTO

Here are the symptoms:

Output shaft spins just slightly when engaged. You can grab it and it stops. Just very light resistance. I am thinking the clutch is bad, but possibly something in the hydraulics?

Looks like it could be a pretty extensive repair. Anyone else dealt with this problem?

Thanks,

John

Since is a S-O-S I would start with Pto cable adjustment. Get a service manuel! It can be explained on here but the book may be eaiser

It would be awesome if that was all it was. There is a very slight drive to the shaft when it is engaged. Are you saying that the cable might not be actuating the valve correctly?

As Shaun said, start with checking the cable adjustment. If that doesn't take care of it, and the rest of the tranny operates fine, be
prepared for a worst-case scenario of going after the PTO clutch itself, which is the LAST component to come out of that transmission.

In addition to the great advice already offered, I want to add one more thing:

DO NOT GRAB THE PTO WITH YOUR HANDS... EVER!!

People have been crippled or killed doing that. That tractor can put out over 30 hp at the PTO and even one horsepower is more than enough to cause permanent damage to your body parts, and even death. If you want to test how strong the PTO is turning, use a piece of 2x lumber as a lever and press the wood into the side of the PTO shaft to try to slow or stop it.

It did not spin at all at first. It wasn't until I gave it a little twist that it spun on its own. And then just barely.

I am really hoping that this is just an adjustment issue, but I'm not holding my breath. Already scoping out where I will pull this tractor in half at.

Here is what I can find in the manual I have. It talks about repair / replace, but not adjust as I am reading it. Is there something I am missing here?

John, look at step 8 again, and go by what you have been told here already. It is way more likely that the cable simply needs adjustment than it is that it needs a clutch rebuild, and you know what? an adjustment is a little easier and quicker too, LOL.

Step #8 IS the adjustment. As stated, an adjustment is most likely the issue here. If the rest of the tranny is working fine, it's not likely a PTO clutch problem. Either your cable is misadjusted, or else the spool in the control valve is sticking.
