Ford 801 (871?) What's it worth?

My neighbor has this 801 Diesel for sale. I believe it to be a 871. It is a Select-O-Speed. Rear tires hold air but are poor. Front tires old and cracked. The Select-O-Speed is messed up but it will move. Runs ok. Has one remote hydraulic. Had a loader on it before they got it. Below the grill is cut out for the loader pump that was on it. It does have power steering. He asked me what it is worth. I said maybe to the right person that really wants it, he might get $1000. I would not give $500 but then again I don't want it.

I'm working on mine and I can tell you that putting new tires on it alone will cost a pretty penny. It probably is worth $500 just to salvage things off of it, the SOS could just need adjusting or it could be a costly overhaul/replacement. BTW, there's a shortage of those old air cleaners and there are people wanting them who want the original look.

If the SOS is not working properly it becomes a parts tractor so most say $500
But do not let these guys fool you.
That injection pump and power steering unit is worth well over $500 on a bad day.

If you were closer I would buy as many as you had for $500 each.

If those corkscrew adjustable wheels are in good shape, we got $200 each for the last set we got in on a donor tractor. Probably worth way more knocked in the head than as it stands.

A running 172 diesel should be worth a few hundred as well.

I would like to know what's at the top of that deep water intake pipe. If it's just a straight pipe then it likely has gotten water in the engine at some point.

I've got a 881 diesel and my brother has a 671 diesel, plus we're working on a 661 diesel.
Lots of usable parts there for us, if it's not to far away I'd give $750 for it, need the ps for the 661.

That's over 300 miles for me, that would be stretching it, I'd be looking a around $150 in fuel plus 10-12 hours drive time for the round trip.
I'd still make the trip but $600 is about the best I could offer at that distance and it would be a few weeks before I could make the trip.
Maybe some one closer will buy it, if not let me know.

Just out of cuiosity, why do some diesels have the square box air cleaner and some have the whole filter up on the side of the hood?

According to the parts site, it was a design change starting on January 1, 1963. Prior to that they had the rectangular box for the oil bath down under the intake manifold, and after that date they had just a pipe going from the oil bath filter up on the side of the hood down to the intake manifold. There was actually an earlier change as well. For the first couple of years ('58-'59) there was no actual pre-cleaner, just a funnel at the top of the pipe inside the grill on the side of the hood, and then from '59-'62 there was a pre-cleaner up on the side of the hood.

Parts have been swapped around on the various tractors over the years so you will see some earlier tractors with the later design and vice-versa.
