601 Select O Speed tractor identification

I just purchased a 601 Select O Speed tractor and am trying to find out exactly what I have so I can get the correct service manual for it. I think I have located most of the pertinent numbers, but the info I can find on these is a bit confusing. The PTO is not working on this one so that is the first thing I am interested in. Without proper ID and service manual, I can't really begin. Pictures should be worth 1000 words so attached a few. Total Newby, so any guidance would be really appreciated.

Wow! A 601 diesel isn't common, nor is a 601 Select-O-Speed. You've got both, plus power steering. Nice find!
The numbers you show are all casting numbers (raised). The model and serial numbers are stamped (by hand, sometimes shallow, and
often eaten away by battery acid on diesels) and located on the flat just above and to the rear of the starter. Your model number
should be 671-D or 681-D, depending on if it has a single speed pto (540 rpm) or 3 speed (540 or 1000 rpm, plus ground speed).

Thank you again both of you for your knowledgeable replies. Sure enough. A little cleaner and air and there are the numbers just as you said.

So looks like the 671.

First thing, can you point me to a good service manual that will give me some good understanding of the PTO system on this tractor?

What kind of a PTO do I have?

Looks darn close, doesn't it?
This one is in Washington state. I am the second owner. Fellow I purchased it from said his grandfather bought it new way back then.

Your transmission looks like it is the later Direct Drive Clutch (DDC) trans. The 671 would have originally come with a Over Running Clutch (ORC) transmission. You will want the original Ford Service Manual for the 1955-1964 tractors that covers the hundred series, '01 series and 4 cylinder 2000/4000 series tractors and also the "2000 & 4000 S-O-S Supplemental Service Manual". The main 1955-1964 tractor service manual will cover everything on your tractor except for the S-O-S trans, as that manual only covers the earlier ORC S-O-S trans, and the supplemental manual covers the ORC trans.

Sean, if I may ask what in the pictures leads you to believe that it is a DDC tranny? I thought most all 312259
castings were the ORC tranny. That being said I do have an early 63 4000 with a 312259 tranny that my dad bought
new and has never been replaced and it is a DDC. I also have a 59 971 with the same casting number and it is an
ORC tranny. The only differences on the outside are the inching pedal size and the shape of the top cover. Just
wondering, Greg NE

It is my understanding that the right side of the top cover of the ORC S-O-S transmission angled down and these pictures show a evenly matched left and right side in terms of slope between the left and right sides of the top cover,.

Sean, on my two tractors the covers are the other way around. I also have a late 63 4000 that has the later casting and it too has the angled top on the right side - almost part of a circle formed in it. My thoughts were that the even top was only on the ORC trannys and the 'uneven' cover was for the later DDC ones. After all these years who's to say a cover hasn't been switched out for some reason on some tractors either. But I do know that my early 63 does have it's original cover since Dad bought it new. Not a big thing, was just wondering anyway. Greg NE

Yep! I think you've got that backwards. Should've read all the replies here before I made the last response. OP should just the 1955 to 1961 Ford shop manual for his.
