Ford 860 voltage regulator

Does anyone know where to get an American made voltage regulator for a Ford 860. I have bought two that last about a minute then die. Considering switching to 12 rather than keep buying foreign made products that don't last. Any info on switching to 12 volt would also be appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure, these days.

Perhaps I remain lucky as my 55 860, 64 4000, and 52 8N are all 6V and all perform as intended.

None of the VRs have been replaced in the last 10 years and all were replaced with genuine CNH VRs when last replaced. Yes, doing so cost more, even 10 years ago.

Who knows who is supplying CNH 6V VRs these days (or even Echlin or Std Ign).

I had the same problem with my NAA. Then I ordered an Echlin ECH VR951 from NAPA. No problems! If you know your OEM part number, mine was FAG 10505-A, go onto the NAPA web site, and plug that part number on the search bar. I think that's how I found it.

I wouldn't bet a NAPA regulator will be good.I once put seven NAPA regulators on a 65 Ford pickup before I got one that worked.

I have converted both of my 960s to an 12 volt alternator as well as several others I have had along the way. 50 bucks is what they cost me. my batteries last along time. never had a problem starting them. my amp gauges works so I can see when they are fully charged after a start up. everyone as there own thought but this I what works for me.

Hi Robert,
I have the original voltage regulator from my 1955 Ford 860. As far as I know, it worked before it was converted to 12v. What state are you in?

Sure. Try Dennis Carpenter or nnalert, part number FAG-10505-A, VR used from 53-64 all gas models. Diesel models use CONF-10505-A. I've purchased from them for years and always get a USA made VR. It's been a few years since so can't conform what they sell today -CALL and ASK. I still have my original AUTO-LITE VRR-4008 Voltage Regulator for my early 48 8N. I also have a few others I've acquired over the years and they all test fine and still work.

Robert,
Like I said, as far as I know, it was a working voltage regulator prior to the 12v conversion. However, since I can't guarantee it's in perfect working condition, I'll send it to you if you pay for shipping. $10 should cover it. PM or email me directly if you're interested.

I went through two V.R.'s from Just 8N's. The first one didn't work at all, the second one latched up contacts within the first 10 minutes of running (yes it was wired correctly). That's when I went to the Echlin.

I don't think the root cause is bad VR's. Typical 6V electronic issues often make fellas think switching to 12V is the answer. You have bad/incorrect wiring in the circuit, IMHO -something else is wrong. 99.98% of electrical issues are due to bad/poor/incorrect wiring jobs regardless of whether th original 6V/POS GRN or a 12V/NEG GRN system. Let's say you buy a USA made VR and install it and it does the same thing? What then? Plus, how do you know they are fried? Don't guess. I'd start with disconnecting the battery and take it in to get tested. While no power is connected you can go thru the entre wiring system and verify continuity is correct. Take the headlights out of the equation by disconnecting them as well -you can always reconnect once root cause problem is established, and, could very well turn out to be bad wiring to lights. Start with the basics and leave the guessing for buying lottery tickets.

Well, you're right, but not the root cause of this problem. Polarizing is done to the generator, not the voltage regulator, to ensure it spins the correct way based on the power source it uses, 6V or 12V. I stand by my statement that the root cause problem is bad/poor/incorrect wiring in the entire electrical circuit, AND, until problem is identified and corrected, will continue to fail no matter how many VR's are installed -USA built or Cheena built. We still don't really know if his VR's are fried - doesn't detail how he verified that. You just can't make guesses and make statements without data to back it up.
