860 Not steering left

I have an 860 that stopped steering left yesterday. The tractor has manual steering, it still turns right relatively easily, however when I try to turn back to the left, the steering wheel feels like it is locked. If I force the steering (to the extent that I can) it feels like a popping happens and it barely turns to the left. I am new to this forum and would appreciate any advice on what to check and how to do so. If this question has been answered here (in the Ford forums) I did not see it and I apologize, please help!

love that tractor! :) Actually you will need to dig into the steering gear box. Something among the gears and associated elements in there will be broken.

Thanks for the reply, is there a resource to help me get the steering components out of the tractor? I mean I can start taking parts off, but I do not want to break anything else if there are difficult parts of the removal. I have the Ford Tractor Shop Manual, but it only shows sections for power steering units, unless I am missing something. Again, thanks for the reply.

Sounds like the upper thrust bearing is disintegrating and balls are falling into the sector gears. Not uncommon due to lack of oil.

You will need to remove the hood and dash.

You may be able to replace the bearing after the steering column has been removed.

Be certain to use a magnet or other suitable means to remove ALL of the balls from the steering gearbox.

You will then need to replace the sector shaft seals and fill the gearbox to a level above the bearing. I usually fill with oil to a level near the top of the column.

Many folks fill with corn head grease if the sector shaft seals continue to leak but I recommend CNH pourable High EP oil.

Thanks dean, what happens if I cannot replace the bearings? Also, on both sides if the steering box are 'panels' with what looks like a lock nut in the center and two regular nuts on the sides, can I get to the bearings through these? Or do I need to pull the whole assembly out of the tractor?

If you do not have a service manual for your tractor, then get one. Either the original Ford Service manual or the I&T FO-20 after market service manual. Both have sections that cover disassembly and rebuilding of the steering gears (steering column).

No.

Do as Sean says and get a manual. This is not something that one can walk you through in a chat forum.
