Conversion from Simms to CAV injection pump.

I had this question somewhat answered, but
I would like more detail. I have Ford 3000,
I'm told a 66, with Simms a bad injection
pump. I've been researching and find lots
of CAVs, but few Simms. Can someone explain
to me the steps needed to convert to CAV,
or even if it is do-able? Pictures would be
great. I also cannot locate the timing
marks on this machine. I have looked in all
the places recommended here and still can't
find any.
Thanks,
Tom

Ok lets sort this out. You have a broken Simms pump that you feel would cost a lot to repair. Now you would like to covert to a CAV DPA pump. You will need a pump, lines, and to the best of my knowledge a different timing plate and gear. Unless you have a friend who will give you the parts needed I don't see how you can come out ahead. To repair a Simms 3 cyl pump isn't that expensive. Buying the parts to convert it, then the labor to swap it out seems like stepping over a dollar to try n save a dime. I have repaired hundreds of Simms and DPAs alike. I have owned my share also. Both are a good bomb proof pump. The only problem a Simms has is the lack Of maintenance it takes to make them last. Each pump will lock up if not used for a period of time. No pump is exempt from issues from lack of use or dirty/watery fuel. Al

Thank you for clearing that up. I'm convinced you are correct and appreciate the info. Are you interested in repairing my Simms pump? Sounds like you know what you're talking about. I'd love to attempt it myself if I knew a little more about it. I've been an outboard tech for 40 plus years and have fixed many fuel injection problems on them, even where I was told only the factory could. There is very little info available for these pumps that I can find.
Thanks Again.

I have what appears to be the Ford published service manual for '65-75 Fords and in it it says Simms pumps for the 3000. My 3000 has a CAV pump and it appears to be OEM. One thing I know on CAV pumps is that you need 2 fuel filters to ensure there is no water to enter the pump.

Second, there is no oil sump to keep full like Simms. Since Simms is plumbed out the top and CAV is distributor plumbed at the rear, you will have to rework your fuel lines, or buy CAV lines if you can find them on a junker....probably can...here or on ebay. I can't help you with the rest of it.....drive gearing, timing..

They used both Simms and CAV pumps on the 3000 at various times during the production run. Here are the dates for each from the parts site:

3000 CAV:
65/12-65 & 9-69 & 1-71/
(From 01/01/65 through 12/31/65 and from 01/01/1971 through the end of the production run)

3000 Simms:
1-66/8-69 & 1-70/12-70
(From 01/01/1966 through 08/31/1969 and from 01/01/1970 through 12/31/1970)

Thanks Sean. Looks like mine is one of the first....one of the first of a new series of something??????usually that means ouch...growing pains. But this
sweetie just runs and runs and all she needs is clean diesel with PS snake oil. Looks like Ford got it right the first time.
