Ford 2600 PTO Issues

I recently purchased a 2600 and was told by the owner that the tractor had to be entirely shut down in order to engage the PTO because it grinds in if you don't. Yesterday was my first opportunity to put the PTO to use and I confirmed that it did indeed have to be shut down in order to engage it which means cranking it over with whatever the PTO load is. Also, the clutch doesn't disengage the PTO during any stage of clutch travel. Assuming that it came from the factory with a 2-stage clutch, my questions are: Are these two problems related? Does full repair require splitting the tractor? How much can I expect to shell out for this at a dealer's shop? I bought it "right" so I son't mind spending the money to get it running correctly. It's a 1978, SN C561300. Transmission 7M19B.

You -might- be able to adjust it and get it to work... for a while. But it sounds like a new clutch is in your future. Yes, it does require a split to replace. Others can tell you what it might cost.

The 2600 could have transmission PTO or live PTO. Look at the second to last digit of your model number (Will start with BA1 or BA2) a "2" is transmission , a "3" is live (two stage clutch).

PTO Clutch is stuck or one or more of the links that pick up the PTO clutch is broken. Pretty common problem. Probably cost at least a grand at a dealer.

I had a 3600 that the pto clutch started slipping. So I adjusted the pedal and ir stopped slipping but I had to shut off the tractor to engage the pto or else it would grind. I got a few hours oyt of it that way then the pto clutch started slipping again.
I had to split the tractor and replace the double clutch.

Bingo! It is a 2 stage. Is there a page that breaks down all the numbers reagarding options, etc.?
