3 cylinder diesel engine ford 4500 back hoe has a separate voltage regulator and a generator with a "field" and "dynamo" lead that connect to the voltage regulator...Now when I start the engine I checked the voltage across the battery posts and see 12.4 volts or so...what should it be? any ideas?

12.4 volts means it is not charging. Disconnect wire at "F" terminal on generator and run a jumper wire between the "F" post and battery
positive. Start engine and rev to high idle while monitoring battery voltage. If it climbs over 13 volts and heads toward 14, your generator
is working and your regulator is faulty.
