oil pan plug and screen

Can the 134 Cu In engine be run without the screen on the oil plug? I take care of a 1957 601 engine in a Railroad park train...

You can run it that way but you run the risk of something getting sucked up into the oil pump and damaging the pump or blocking a passage and starving some part of the engine from oil.

I don't think we will have any problem with dirt as it will only be run on 2000 ft of railroad track...Thanks for the info...Just didn't want it to suck air....

I sorta like that screen I have seen a many old ford engine get a piece of hard as ell broken valve seal in the pump and cause a ell of a mess to deal with... If a screen is a option I would use it and trust it...

It seems it would be better to leave the screen in....with the engine in the Locomotive the drain plug will not come all the way out...When gasket goes bad then it will be time to do something then...

Never could understand why it is there.
Screen on the pump pick up takes care of
it. The one on the drain plug is just
sitting there in the middle of the pan. How
is it doing anything?

Depends on which oil pump it has. On the earlier ones the pickup didn't have a screen and the end of the pickup tube had a round open ended cylinder that actually fit inside the screen on the drain plug. On the later ones the pickup had its own screen.

My pickup tube has the cylinder..The screen on the drain plug goes inside the cylinder..Does anyone know if I can put the later pickup with screen on my oil pump...That would take care of my problem....I am puting bearings in the engine account someone ran it with gas in the oil...#4 rod bearing is bad...getting crank turned at NAPA...
