Where is the selectospeed pickup screen?

Changed my oil, filter 2x and it still has a pretty loud pump noise when just sitting there. Shifts and drives nicely, so thinking I might change the oil again.

Have heard about the pickup screen - is this on the bottom of the trans? So I should get a gasket for the bottom plate too?

Assuming that you are speaking of a **1 or four cylinder 2/4000 series tractor, the suction strainer is the sump drain. You must remove it to drain the S-O-S.

It's a 3000, got it.

My dad drained it before I got it so I have only filled it. Guess I would have figured out when I drained it LOL.

A 3000 is not the same as the pre-1965 x01 series or 4 cylinder 2000/4000 series. The pickup screen on those earlier models is at the very bottom of the left side of the transmission housing and is also the place to drain them.

The S-O-S on a 3000 (and 1965+ 3 cylinder 2000 & 4000 series) has a separate drain plug on the bottom of the trans housing. The pickup screen is on the left side, down low but not at the very bottom. It is the part numbered 22 in the drawing below:..

First drain the system out of the drain plug at the bottom of the trans housing, then loosen the bolt numbered 37 and then rotate the strap numbered 24 out of the way and then twist the knob that is the end of the screen back and forth as you pull it out.Rinse it with a petroleum based solvent (kerosene, diesel fuel, etc.) and let the solvent drain off. Then re-install.

If you do not have a service manual and an Operators Manual for your tractor get both. The Operator's Manual covers routine maintenance items like changing the fluid and filters and removing and cleaning that screen. The service manual covers other things including how to properly adjust the pressure and bands in the S-O-S transmission and the PTO cable, as well as taking the top cover off of the transmission, which needs to be done following the proper procedure, and if the proper procedure isn't followed then costly repairs are likely to be needed.
