Ford 5000 PTO detent fell out

Hi all. Not sure what happened, but I got my 5000 w/SOS out of the shed yesterday to spray, put pto in gear while filling sprayer, then it looked
rainy. I disengaged the pto, and the lever came forward freely - no resistance at all. I found the little detent stud that screws in the hole w/the
spring behind it lying on the footboard. I threaded it back in this mornining, but that's all. I plan to knock the roll pin out of the handle and turn
the shaft to where the slot in the bottom of the handle will fit back over the detent. Is that all I need to do, or has something gotten out of line
inside that will need attention? Did I explain this well enough?

Does the handle feel normal now that you've threaded the plug back in? If yes, leave well enough alone. If there is no detent, you'll need to do some fishing inside with a magnet. Suggest accessing through the round plate with the 4 bolts.

Thanks. Haven't finished the job yet, but the handle seems to want to stop just before it hits the plug. The handle was all the way forward - laying on the footboard - when I threaded the plug back in. When I pull it backward, it encounters resistance just before it touches the plug. I was hoping maybe I could knock the roll pin out, turn the shaft into position, then put the handle on with the plug between both stops like it should be. Is that a good plan? If I need to go into the case with a magnet, what am I fishing for? New territory for me.

These are all of the pieces you're looking for. Again, suggest removing the 4-bolt cover so you can see what's going on. Drain a little oil from the rear axle before removing, or else park on a hill so the tractor leans to the right.

Unfortunately if the handle wasn't in it's proper position when you put the plug and spring back in it probably pushed the detent pin out and dropped it into the bottom on the axle housing.
When I got my 5000 the pto detent didn't work, some one had used enough pressure on the handle it had bent the roll pin, this allowed the arm to move past the detent pin allowing the pin to fall out.
We found the pin in the bottom of the housing after draining the oil and removing the lift top.
